REMEMBERING A HERO!
MONDAY, JUNE 15, 2015
2 years on from the tragic passing of The Wife Beaters band original lead guitarist, Vic Vitol tells the story of the greatest man he ever knew.
Vic: "Where do you start with a talent so massive and a physical presence so huge as Lew? At the beginning seems to be the best place, which for Lew was as the son of bar owners and brewers born in the 1950's.
"He often told me about being 14 yeas old and serving customers as well as himself of the beers and liquors readily available, so he got to be quite a connoiseur of alcohol early on.
"In those days you left home early, and so did Lew at 15 on his Triumph Bonneville motorcycle. He was already a naturally gifted musician by then, having been taught by his mother at first on piano, and then (much to her chagrin), on the guitar Lew said he wanted to try as his next instrument. So in the late 1960's, Lew was starting and joining his first tentative bands. When the '60's ended Lew hadn't actually found his place musically but was an exceptional enough player to find himself through the 1970's, in demand as a well paid session musician. He also managed to acquire a Merchant Seaman's ticket that enabled him to work his passage round the world. He'd pitch up anywhere and hire out his talents as a player. Then something happened that was like an atom bomb going off - Punk.
"The early 1970's were characterised by the era of the great guitarists in rock, and as a great guitarist himself, Lew found work quite easy. But with the arrival of Punk, everything Lew was getting paid to do suddenly fell out of favour. With that went his living. He was still playing occasionally in the late 1970's for special events and charities, but he'd given up music as a way of earning a living. Times were hard, he moved to France in 1979 taking with him the acoustic guitar he'd built for himself. The early '80's were spent in the South of France living in a spacious villa adjoining a vinyard, where Lew was employed locally as a jack-of-all-trades handyman. He'd play the local cafes in the evenings. Lew said this was one of the happiest times of his life, idylic, and a bit of a rustic dream for most people.
"Lew next pitched up in West Germany where the first person he met was the son of the Burgermeister of Stuttgart, who was actually a bit of a rogue. Lew was playing bars there and using his merchant seaman's ticket to bluff his way into the servicemens bars where the drinking was cheaper. When he went anywhere it was in the Mayor's limo. All the time Lew was in France and Germany he managed to speak both languages fluently within months of arriving there, he was that sharp.
"The Berlin wall came down and the Cold War ended and that coincided with Lew coming home. He'd already had quite a life by then and his thoughts turned to settling down with a woman. The one he met didn't work out and they'd had two kids by then. When the parents split, Lew got custody of both his kids and brought them up untill they were adults. During this time music was off Lew's mind, he'd pretty much given up apart from the fact that he would often play his acoustic for his own amusement.
"I met Lew in those days for the first time and right from the start we became firm friends. I was playing in bands at the time, but I never bothered Lew about joining any of them because he was struggling as a single parent.
"About the time Lew's kids were adult and started leaving home me and him decided to start The Wife Beaters. We were drunk when we chose the name. We tried out a couple of players on bass and drums that didn't work out, then Lew met Tom Temper and Alex Anger, a bass and drum rhythm section looking for a band. They joined and within 3 months we'd recorded our first self titled The Wife Beaters album and played live with two 45 minute sets. That was incedible chemistry. A year later Lew as tragically struck down with lung cancer while The Wife Beaters were in the process of putting their second album together.
"Lew loved being in The Wife Beaters, as we both pointed out, it was a fun retirement project for him and not without a little irony that he was getting a second wind as a musician playing exactly the kind of 1970's old school punk rock & roll that had finished his career 30 years earlier. Yeah, we often laughed about that one. He was literally half way dead during the recording of the second album Hit 'em Again! Lew lived to see the release of Hit 'em Again! and was immensely proud. By then all his friends knew he was on his way out.
"He died in early December 2012. One of the last times I spoke to him before Lew passed, he said "Keep this band going...". It's what he wanted, because Lew knew there was more to come from the band even then. He was my best buddy for the best part of 20 years and until The Wife Beaters we'd never played together. So for me it was an honor to play with Lew, that he thought the stuff was good enough. I'll always remember him every day as a guiding presence in my thoughts, a towering intellect and consumate professional. A gentleman who set high standards for himself and expected them to be met by others.
"Lew was so much larger than life in every way, I really looked up to him. When we stated The Wife Beaters he was already in his late 50s, but you wouldn't know it, and it really didn't matter, in fact his experience showed in the music we made. Old school rock & roll played with a Punk attitude. That was where the gold was for us. By the second album recording Lew was in a bad way, and I remember him in the studio being half the man he was physically, but with the same vitality deep in him, his spirit was indomitable. Hit 'em Again! was released in time for Lew to see the finished product and he knew he'd done his job even under the worst circumstances. I'll never forget those recording sessions and the way Lew was in bad shape but determined to see it through and give his best, his last. When he died a few months later, he had maintained his incredible dignity and independence to the end.
"I'll miss him the rest of my days and so will a lot of people, but near the end of his life, Lew Lewis finally put his name to something in a way he'd never been able to or considered worthy before: The Wife Beaters. He'll always be alive not just in everyone's memory but in their ears and eyes on record and document of The Wife Beaters rock 'n' roll riot "

Sexy, swaggerin', red light district blues quintet Johnny Love are gonna open the show, followed by hi-velocity, lo-fidelity, full-intensity surf kings The Waterboarders. Doors will open at 8pm - get there early, y'all, there'll be plenty o' beer to drink. The good-time rock 'n' roll party then heads to Cornwall on Sunday, April 28, for another FREE show, at the Queens Arms in Torpoint. They released their self-titled debut album in 2010 and follow-up 'Swim for Shore' in 2011. The band has also toured in the States and earlier this month supported the legedary Buzzcocks. Their new single 'Non Stop Party Machine' is to be released on April 20.
The Wife Beaters Head into the Studio!
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 2013
SINNERS rejoice! Burgerville's baddest have been workin' up more than 25 fist-pumpin', foot-stompin' garage punk gutter anthems for their fortcomin', secretly-titled, third album.
In defiance of dangerous drug habits, killer hangovers and unfaltering public apathy, they will head into the studio to capture the trashy gems in mid-April...
Accused of boastin' a back catalogue of largely throwaway, white-trash dirt-punk, the trailer trash troubadours have answered their army of critics by takin' a "mature" direction for their ill-advised third opus.
The new tunes touch on lyrical themes rangin' from strippers and videogames to fast cars and narcotics.
Wife Beaters frontman Vic Vitol said: "These filthy new ditties are so quick, heavy and raw that I physically can't play them without putting a quart of cheap liquor and a plate of greasy burritos down my neck. Now get outta my trailer, there's a fist-fight on Jerry Springer!"
The band's legion of dedicated fans will get their first sneak preview of the new record when The Wife Beaters bring their good-time punk rock 'n' roll to a FREE show at The Voodoo Lounge in Plymouth, UK, on Wednesday, April 24. Click here for more details...
Meanwhile, satisfy that need for new Wife Beaters merchandise by clickin' here...

The Wife Beaters Come Back for More!
THURSDAY, JANUARY 31, 2013
LIKE the drunken fool cruising for a midnight knockout, the baddest gang in Burgerville are staggering back for more. Against all legal advice, those boys that just won't quit are working on some dirty garage punk rock 'n' roll anthems for a third raucous album.
After six tough weeks holed up in a squalid Burgerville basement, drinkin' cheap liquor and gettin' loaded 'til dawn, more than 20 fresh tunes have emerged from the haze. If the relentless mob can keep Jimmy Jail outta the State Penitentiary, The Wife Beaters will be recording their third ill-advised opus later this year.
'Beaters fans can hear a rough four-track rehearsal take of 'I'm a Mummy (Live at Wembley)' by clickin' here. New shows will be annouced soon here.
Last year's 'Hit 'em Again!' and the self-titled 2011 debut album are both available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and more - and they're also doing the rounds for a criminal $5 on Bandcamp and CD Baby. One of those two is also offering the debut album for a bargain $3!

R.I.P. Lew LewisTUESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2012
IT IS with great sadness that we must say goodbye to Lew Lewis, who passed away following a battle with cancer last Tuesday, December 4.
Lew was a founding member of The Wife Beaters and a masterful guitarist who had graced stages all over the world. The son of a moonshiner from Burgerville woods, he left home on a motorbike at the age of 15 to begin a musical career that streched back to the 1960s. Sill a rock 'n' roll warrior in his 50s, he proved his imperious character on two albums of punk rampage that defied his years. Lew left the band in the summer of 2012 due to illness, but was able to see the release of The Wife Beaters' second album 'Hit 'em Again!' in October. He will be remembered as a brother in arms. |

The Wife Beaters in Panamá!
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2012
A LITTLE while ago an un-named member of the gang had to go to Panamá for something they're not able to talk about. The next thing we knew, The Wife Beaters were doing an interview with Elías Vega of the highly-respectable Intervencion Punk 'zine. We ended up talking about chicken, drinking and the time we shut down a bar... Click here to read the interview!
This one is for our legion of Spanish-speaking fans or curious Google Translate users only.
